In the San Diego area, we are accustomed to hearing about bad air. In 2015, in fact, the American Lung Association’s “State of the Air” report gave San Diego an “F” grade for ozone pollution. However, for polluted cities like San Diego, indoor air pollution can often match or exceed outdoor pollution.
Web MD’s guide to improving indoor air quality, cites an ominous quote from William J. Calhoun, MD, professor of medicine at the University of Texas: "Indoor air quality can be worse than outdoor air quality in almost every case.”
Obviously, this is a serious problem for human health: indoor air pollutants exacerbate (or even cause) many health problems, from minor eye and throat irritations, to asthma or even cancer.
For those who spend significant time indoors, like home office workers, the problem is magnified: increased exposure to indoor pollutants increases the risk of health problems.
Common sources of indoor air pollution include particulates, like dust, mold, fungus, or viruses. Yet, as a recent study by San Diego University found, less known pollutants like candles, frying food, and cigarette (and marijuana) smoke also contribute to in-home pollution.
Unfortunately, most homes in the San Diego area include these pollutants.
However, there is hope: You can take simple steps to purify your indoor air.
In its Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home the EPA urges homeowners to clean ventilation systems; if cleaning the ventilation system does not suffice (when outdoor air, like San Diego’s, is especially polluted), air cleaning devices, installed in HVAC systems, can help cleanse indoor air.
